The UA Opera Theatre under the direction of assistant professor of music Paul Houghtaling, has been advanced as a semi-finalist in the National Opera Association’s 2009 Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition. Two scenes were submitted on video and both were selected. This marks the first national recognition of UA’s opera program. Scenes from The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti and Street Scene by Kurt Weill will be performed in competition at the National Opera Association National Convention in Atlanta in January.

Tuscaloosa, AL – The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents a Tribute to Larry Mathis concert on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama. The concert will feature performances by The University of Alabama African Drumming Ensemble, Mallet Ensemble, Chamber Percussion Ensemble, Mallet Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. The program will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Tom Gauger, Johann Sebastian Bach, Kristen Shiner-McGuire, Dave Holliden, and Imogen Heap, along with traditional African, Mexican, and Latin/Jazz works. Visiting professor of percussion Beth Gottlieb will conduct the ensemble, along with Jennifer Caputo, director of the African Drumming Ensemble, and Brian Radock, a graduate student in percussion. The concert is to honor Larry Mathis, UA Professor of Percussion since 1969, who is in recovery from a bike accident this summer. This event is FREE and open to the public. Larry Mathis is Associate Professor of Percussion. He received his M.S. and B.S. from the Juilliard School of Music. Teachers include Saul Goodman, former timpanist with the New York Philharmonic, Morris Goldenberg, staff percussionist with NBC and member of NBC Symphony, Fred Hinger, former timpanist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera, William Schinstine, former percussionist with the National, Pittsburgh, and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, City Symphony of New York, Alabama Symphony, and Tuscaloosa Symphony. He was principal percussionist and teacher at the Brevard Music Center 1988-89. He has been a University of Alabama School of Music faculty member since 1969.
