(Tuscaloosa, AL)-The University of Alabama School of Music presents the University of Alabama Jazz Ensemble in concert with the Alabama Cavaliers on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall in the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. The program will feature big band music and traditional jazz with vocals. The event will also include dancers from the Dance Clubs of Tuscaloosa. Mart Avant, president of Alabama Cavaliers, and Chris Kozak, director of jazz studies at UA, will conduct the bands. The Alabama Cavaliers will also make a presentation to the University of Alabama Jazz Studies program as part of their scholarship program. This event is FREE and open to the public. (Athens, Ga.)-On April 23 and 24, students from the University of Alabama Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Standards Combo participated in the University of Georgia/ Athens Jazz Festival and Competition. Chris Kozak and Tom Wolfe accompanied the group as directors. According to Kozak, “Our adjudicators agreed they put on an outstanding performance and could not find much (if anything) to critique. One of the adjudicators in particular, Guitarist Mimi Fox was very impressed with both groups.”
In addition to competing, both groups performed in downtown Athens on the Twilight Jazz Festival main stage to a warm reception.

(Tuscaloosa, AL) – The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents the University Singers in concert on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL. The first half of the program will include “Ubi caritas” by Maurice Duruflé, “Sing Unto God” by George Frederic Handel, “Coro di Schiavi Ebrei” by Giuseppe Verdi, “A Jubilant Song” by Norman Dello Joio and “Ev’ry Time I Feel the Spirit,” a spiritual arranged by William L. Dawson, all conducted by Imgyu Kang, doctoral conducting associate. The second half of the program will feature “Ave verum corpus” and “Ave maris stella” by Javier Busto, “Ubi caritas” by Rene Clausen, “Vecheri Tvoyeya taynïya, Op. 58. No. 7″ by Alexandre Gretchaninoff, “Fern Hill” (based on the Dylan Thomas poem) by John Corigliano, and two Afro-American spirituals, “Too Late Sinnuh” and “Wade in de Water,” all directed by UA Professor Dr. John H. The program will include “Kreuzspiel” and “Kontrapunkte” by Karlheinz Stockhausen. The program will also feature four pieces by student composers Daniel Marbury, Peter Sloan, Robert Lewis, Young Jin Jeon, and Daniel Holmes.
