We regret the announcement was not made at the game on Saturday, the number/winner were texted to the announcer but due to phone interference he did not get it until he left the stadium. Thank you to everyone who participated in this Scholarship Fundraiser and especially to Best Buy, for the donation of the guitar.

UA Opera TheatreThe UA Opera Theatre under the direction of assistant professor of music Paul Houghtaling, has been advanced as a semi-finalist in the National Opera Association’s 2009 Collegiate Opera Scenes Competition. Two scenes were submitted on video and both were selected. This marks the first national recognition of UA’s opera program.  Scenes from The Medium by Gian Carlo Menotti and Street Scene by Kurt Weill will be performed in competition at the National Opera Association National Convention in Atlanta in January.

Tuscaloosa, AL – The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents a Tribute to Larry Mathis concert on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama. The concert will feature performances by The University of Alabama African Drumming Ensemble, Mallet Ensemble, Chamber Percussion Ensemble, Mallet Orchestra and Percussion Ensemble. The program will include works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Tom Gauger, Johann Sebastian Bach, Kristen Shiner-McGuire, Dave Holliden, and Imogen Heap, along with traditional African, Mexican, and Latin/Jazz works. Visiting professor of percussion Beth Gottlieb will conduct the ensemble, along with Jennifer Caputo, director of the African Drumming Ensemble, and Brian Radock, a graduate student in percussion. The concert is to honor Larry Mathis, UA Professor of Percussion since 1969, who is in recovery from a bike accident this summer. This event is FREE and open to the public. Larry Mathis is Associate Professor of Percussion. He received his M.S. and B.S. from the Juilliard School of Music. Teachers include Saul Goodman, former timpanist with the New York Philharmonic, Morris Goldenberg, staff percussionist with NBC and member of NBC Symphony, Fred Hinger, former timpanist with the Philadelphia Orchestra and Metropolitan Opera, William Schinstine, former percussionist with the National, Pittsburgh, and San Antonio Symphony Orchestras. He has performed with the New York Philharmonic under Leonard Bernstein, City Symphony of New York, Alabama Symphony, and Tuscaloosa Symphony. He was principal percussionist and teacher at the Brevard Music Center 1988-89. He has been a University of Alabama School of Music faculty member since 1969.

TUSCALOOSA – The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents the Fall Spectrum Showcase Concert, a “Best of the Best” variety show on Friday, November 6, 2009 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music Building on the campus of The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL.  Faculty and students will be featured showcasing every aspect of what School of Music has to offer. Ensembles to perform include the Faculty Brass Quintet, Alabama Wind Ensemble, Capstone Woodwind Quintet, Percussion Ensemble, Cavell Trio, Huxford Symphony Orchestra, University Singers, Jazz Ensemble, Jazz Standards Combo and Jazz Ensemble. The concert will culminate with a featured appearance by the entire University of Alabama Million Dollar Band performing the favorite cheers and songs associated with football at Bryant-Denny.  Don’t miss this unique opportunity to hear this group “up close” along with the other stars of the UA music program. Everything from classical to jazz will be featured with a variety suited for everyone. There is no admission to this concert. Dress is casual; “football weekend attire”.
