The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music is proud to present An Evening of American Song: A Guest Recital by Shawn Roy and Chan Kiat Lim” on Sunday, September 11, 2011 at 4:00 p.m. in the Recital Hall of the Moody Music building on the campus of The University of Alabama.

The recital will feature poems set to music by American Composers Pasatieri, Bolcom, Duke and Penhorwood. Oscar Wilde, Robert Herrick, Edgar Allen Poe and Langston Hughes are among the poets to have their works performed. These rarely heard pieces will be a treat for literary and music lovers alike.

This concert is FREE and open to the public. For more information visit: www.music.ua.edu/calendar or call 348-7111.

ABOUT THE MUSIC:

Three Poems of Oscar Wilde (1999) by Thomas Pasatieri (b.1945) reveals the neo-Romantic style with expressive dissonances to evoke longing, anguish, and loss. The score translates Oscar Wilde’s words into music: his ideals and conflicts of romantic love are fully expressed and heard in Pasatieri’s writing.  Pasatieri resides in New York City and continues to write mostly vocal music as well as film scoring.

Three Gothic Ballads (1959) by John Duke (1899 –1984) is representative of his mature style. They are typical of his mid-century output, characterized by complexities in harmony, texture, and vivid word painting. These pieces do not relate to each other in continuity of text. Rather, they are effective studies in character analysis. The composer perfectly reflects each character through his use of colorful harmonies, extreme dynamics, and descriptive piano figures. The techniques express these haunting Gothic characters, with their aspects of decay, horror, and the supernatural.

The Ladies by Edwin Penhorwood (b. 1939) is a newer composition based on four ladies through the eyes of four different poets.  He uses a variety of musical genres in his writing, from an old English songs to romantic sweeping vocal lines to early renaissance melodic writing.  Penhorwood is currently on faculty at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University and is well known for his comic opera, Too Many Sopranos.

The University of Alabama College of Arts & Sciences School of Music presents “Percussion Potpourri: Faculty Percussion Recital by Beth Gottlieb” on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 7:30 p.m. in the Concert Hall of the Moody Music building on the campus of The University of Alabama.

Gottlieb will be assisted by Danny Gottlieb, drum set; Kevin Chance, piano; Tom Wolfe, guitar; Christopher Kozak, bass; Jonathan Noffsinger, saxophone; Scott Radock, snare drum; The University of Alabama Percussion Ensemble; and Dr. Kenneth Ozzello, conductor. Gottlieb and company will be performing a smattering of pieces, stretching across the genres. This percussion potpourri features a number of sounds and styles that capture the diversity of the instrument. This concert is FREE and open to the public.  For more information visit: www.music.ua.edu/calendar or call 348-7111

Husband and wife, Beth and Danny Gottlieb (performed and recorded with Herbie Hancock, Bobby McFerrin, Pat Metheny, Sting, Manhattan Transfer, and others) are members of Gary Sinise’s Lt. Dan Band, which travels the world performing for the troops. The duo will open the concert with a piece using the soft, subtle sounds of the marimba and talking drums from Africa. The recital will feature a number of mallet percussion pieces including a Bach prelude on marimba, a beautiful sound! In the 1920 and 30′s, xylophone was huge for silent movie music. Gottlieb will perform a xylophone rag with the UA Mallet Ensemble.   Rounding out the spectrum is a classic, Edelwiess, on vibraphone.

The ‘main event’ on this concert is the “Percussion Concerto” by Jennifer Higdon where Gottlieb will be playing 21 different percussion instruments in four stations.  Dr. Ken Ozzello, will conduct the UA Percussion Ensemble and Kevin Chance.  To end the recital, Gottlieb will be joined by Scott Radock, the fabulous UA Jazz Faculty, Tom Wolfe, Chris Kozak and Jon Noffsinger and the Alabama premier of Suite for Beth, a lively fun, upbeat, jazzy piece written for her by Chuck Archard.
