The Community Music School (CMS) is a non-degree granting outreach program for the School of Music which serves interested students of all ages and levels of ability. An accredited member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the 45-member CMS faculty is comprised of School of Music faculty, selected graduate and undergraduate students, and professionals from the community.
Over 600 students receive private and group instruction on wind, brass, string, piano, harp, organ, guitar, drums, voice, and composition/theory. The CMS also features a thriving Kindermusik® program for ages birth – 7 years. Ensembles and group classes include Chamber Strings, the Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra, Jazz Combo, various chamber ensembles, and adult group instruction on strings and brass ensemble. Lessons, classes and ensembles are open for enrollment year-round, with summer options also including a strings camp (Grades 4-9), and a beginning level children’s musical (ages 6-12Y).
HALLOWEEN IN OZ
A family friendly carnival-style event. Focused mainly for ages pre-K thru elementary school. Games, prizes, live music, inflatable bouncy unit, a costume parade, and visiting Dorothy, Glinda, the Witch of the West (if you dare!) and the Wizard.

October 12: Wind/Brass/Percussion begin attending TYO rehearsals.
October 25: Halloween In Oz, CMS Fundraiser/Outreach Event
November 23: Make up lesson date for Labor Day closure. No Ensembles meet.
November 25-27: UA/CMS Closed for Thanksgiving.
November 30: Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra Concert, 7:00 p.m.
December 7: Last week of Lessons, Ensembles, Yoga, and OT/ABC Kindermusik
December 14: Last week of Kindermusik Village Session II
December 21: UA/CMS Closes for Winter Break. Online enrollment stays open.
CMS UNSCHEDULED CLOSURE INFORMATION:
If UA is closed, then Community Music School is also closed. Classes, lessons, and ensembles can’t meet when the building is legally closed. If you are unsure about a possible weather related closure, please check area TV announcements or check the UA website at www.ua.edu to see if UA is closed. If you do not see a closure notice on the main page (usually in a yellow box with black and red text), then your scheduled CMS activity will occur.
Regarding making up weather related closure dates:
Kindermusik Classes – will be made up by extending the session dates.
Large Ensembles, Chamber Groups, Group Classes – at the next rehearsal the teacher will discuss a make-up.
Private Lessons – individual teachers will provide their plan of extending the session or elongating scheduled lessons to make up the UA closure.
