The Community Music School (CMS) is a non-degree granting outreach program for the School of Music which serves interested students of all ages and levels of ability. An accredited member of the National Guild for Community Arts Education, the 45-member CMS faculty is comprised of School of Music faculty, selected graduate and undergraduate students, and professionals from the community.

Over 600 students receive private and group instruction on wind, brass, string, piano, harp, organ, guitar, drums, voice, and composition/theory. The CMS also features a thriving Kindermusik® program for ages birth – 7 years. Ensembles and group classes include string orchestras, Jazz Combo, various chamber ensembles, and adult group instruction on strings and piano. Open for enrollment year-round, summer options also include a middle school strings camp, instrument “sampler” camps and a beginning level children’s musical.

November 24: Make up day for September 1 closure. No Youth Orchestra.

November 26 – 28: UA/CMS Closed for Thanksgiving Holiday

December 8: Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra Concert, 7:00 p.m., Free

December 8 – 12:  Last week of Fall Semester private lessons.

December 23 – January 4:  UA/CMS Closed for Winter Break


January 12 – 16:  First week of CMS Spring Semester Private Lessons

January 19:  UA/CMS Closed for MLK, Jr. Holiday.

January 26:  Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra & Kindermusik classes begin

March 13 – 20:  Spring Break – UA/CMS Closed.

March 30: Kindermusik Village Session II begins.

May 4:  Tuscaloosa Youth Orchestra Spring Concert, 7:00 p.m., Free

May 4 – 8: Last week of Spring Session Private Lessons

May 11:  Make-up date for January 19 Closure. Last week of Kindermusik Our Time/Imagine That! Classes.

May 18: Last week of Kindermusik Village Session II.




 If UA is closed, then Community Music School is also closed. Classes, lessons, and ensembles can’t meet when the building is legally closed. If you are unsure about a possible weather related closure, please check area TV announcements or check the UA website at to see if UA is closed. If you do not see a closure notice on the main page (usually in a yellow box with black and red text), then your scheduled CMS activity will occur.  

 Regarding making up weather related closure dates: 

Kindermusik Classes – will be made up by extending the session dates.  

Large Ensembles, Chamber Groups, Group Classes – at the next rehearsal your teacher will provide their plan to make up the UA closure.

Private Lessons – individual teachers will provide their plan of extending the session or elongating scheduled lessons to make up the UA closure.
