Dr. Carol A. Prickett is Professor of Music Therapy and Music Education at the University of Alabama.  She is the Director of the Music Therapy Program and the Department Head for Music Education.  In 2009, Dr. Prickett received a Lifetime Achievement in Music Therapy award, the highest honor given by the American Music Therapy Association. She is a College of Arts & Sciences Leadership Board Faculty Fellow (2008-2011), and in 2007, Dr. Prickett was honored to receive the A&S “Outstanding Commitment to Students” award. She served as a Distinguished Teaching Fellow in Arts & Sciences from 1999 – 2001, and has received awards for outstanding research as well as for service from the Southeastern Chapter of the American Music Therapy Association.  A member of the editorial review boards of the Journal of Music Therapy and, formerly, the Journal of Research in Music Education, she has also edited two books; has published in national and international journals; and has regularly presented sessions at American Music Therapy Association and at national music education conferences and seminars.

She began the music therapy program at the University of Alabama in 1985, having previously pioneered the music therapy degree at Georgia College and State University.  She teaches music therapy courses, music therapy practica, and music education research, as well as a graduate course which prepares music students in all areas for a career in college teaching.

Dr. Prickett received the Ph.D. in Music Education and the M.M. in Music Therapy from Florida State University.  Her undergraduate degrees are from Birmingham-Southern College.  She has served on the Executive Board of the National Association for Music Therapy and as President of the Southeastern Region – American Music Therapy Association.
