Soprano Jennifer Griffith Cowgill is Associate Professor of Voice and Vocal Pedagogy. She has performed a wide variety of repertoire in recital, concert, opera and musical theater throughout the United States including solo performances with the Atlanta Choral Guild and the Atlanta Ballet Orchestra. Recent engagements include recitals at Darton College in Albany, Georgia; the 2011 Florida Flute Association Conference with flutist Diane Boyd Schultz; the 2009 College Music Society (CMS) National Conference, where she performed songs of Virgil Thomson; the Mississippi University for Women where she reprised her acclaimed portrayal of Rose in Heggie’s At the Statue of Venus; and the Second Saturday Concert Series in Chicago (April 2011) on which she performed Rorem’s Ariel. In August of 2011, the soprano will appear with Dr. Schultz at the National Flute Association Confrence in Virginia in their popular “Dueling Divas” presentation. She has also been heard as soloist in Carmina Burana with the University of Alabama Singers at Spivey Hall in Georgia, and in recital at Mansfield State University in Pennsylvania and in Washington, DC. Locally, she has appeared on Shelton State’s “Terrific Tuesday” Concert Series and in several concerts on the University of Alabama campus. Additional stage credits include roles in The Magic Flute, The Coronation of Poppea, The Seagull, The Pirates of Penzance and Little Red Riding Hood. Her most recent musical theater roles include Lady Larken in Once Upon a Mattress and Laurey in Oklahoma.
Dr. Cowgill is in increasing demand as a vocal pedagogy lecturer and clinician. In June of 2009, she presented a paper at the International Voice Foundation Annual Symposium in Philadelphia and she has been awarded a Faculty Research Grant from the University of Alabama to establish a voice science lab. She is the author of an article on breathing techniques which was published in the November/December 2009 issue of the NATS Journal of Singing. Dr. Cowgill has taught master classes and breathing workshops at Darton College (GA), the University of South Alabama, Murray State University (TN), Shelton State Community College (AL), Mansfield State University (PA), the Druid City Opera Workshop (AL), and the Florida Flute Association, among others. Her voice students have been prize winners in numerous state and regional NATS competitions and many current and former students work regularly in opera apprenticeships and training programs throughout the country as well as with musical theater companies in New York, Chicago, Nashville and elsewhere.
Dr. Cowgill received the Doctor of Music in vocal performance from Florida State University and the Master of Music from Peabody Conservatory at Johns Hopkins University. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in vocal performance from Oberlin Conservatory where she studied with the internationally renowned voice pedagogue Richard Miller. Additional training includes studies at the Tanglewood Music Center, The Chautauqua Summer Institute and the Dicapo Opera Young Artists Program in New York City.
