Musicology Endowed Chair Lecture & Demonstration

Known internationally, Baroque oboist and musicologist Geoffrey Burgess has appeared with baroque ensembles in his home country Australia, and across North America. For twenty years he worked in Paris with Les Arts Florissants, and he has been a featured soloist with the Washington Bach Consort, Philadelphia Bach Festival, and with the choir of Trinity Wall Street, New York. Currently on the faculty of the Eastman School of Music, Burgess has authored studies on the history of the oboe and French Baroque opera, Well-Tempered Woodwinds, a history of the early music revival in the U.S. as seen through the eyes of the master instrument builder Friedrich von Huene, his revisionist performance practice guide The Pathetick Musician based on the late writings of Bruce Haynes appeared from Oxford University Press in 2016.

Anna Marsh, baroque bassoon, plays with Opera Lafayette, Tempesta Di Mare, Tafelmusik, Opera Atelier, Pacific Musicworks, Seattle Baroque Orchestra, Trinity Wall Street Baroque Orchestra, Washington Bach Consort, among others. She is bassoon faculty at the San Francisco Early Music Society Baroque Workshop and the Hawaii Performing Arts Festival where she also runs the Instrumental program. She is the co-director of the Renaissance and Baroque group Ensemble Lipzodes. She holds a Doctorate of Music in Historical Performance from Indiana University and has been heard on Performance Today, Harmonia, the Super Bowl, CBC radio and on the record labels Chandos, Analekta, Centaur, Naxos, Avie, and on Musica Omnia’s Grammy nominated album of Handel’s “Israel in Egypt”.

Leon Schelhase, harpsichord, was recipient of the American Bach Soloists’ prestigious Goldberg Prize, and was continuo accompanist fellow at the Baroque Performance Institute, Oberlin, OH. He has performed with Emmanuel Music, Ensemble Florilege, and the Gardener Museum Orchestra, Cambridge Concentus, and A Far Cry, Old City Music, La Rocinante (Colombia), Ars Antiqua, the Philadelphia Bach Festival Orchestra and New York State Baroque, Pegasus Early Music (Rochester, NY). He holds a BMus (Hons) from the University of Cape Town and a Master’s Degree in Historical Performance from Boston University. He is currently a faculty member of the Curtis Institute of Music in harpsichord . He appeared as guest soloist with the American Bach Soloists, CA and served as Assistant Conductor in Handel’s TESEO at the Chicago Opera Theater.
