Salvation is Created – In Memory of Jim Duren

The University of Alabama School of Music mourns the loss of one of our most revered graduates, Jim Duren, class of 1973.

In celebration of his life, please enjoy this tribute from the UA Trombone Studio.

The Oak Mountain High School Band Facebook account shared this about him.

“Mr. Duren was the founding band director at Oak Mountain High School and served in this role from 1999-2012. Prior to this position, he served as Director of Bands at Pelham High School (1987-1999), Mountain Brook High School (1978-1987), and Mountain Brook Junior High (1973-1978).

During his 39 year career, Mr. Duren was a role model for countless teens, and the personal relationships he built with his students made him a lovable mentor and lifelong friend. In 2015, he was inducted into the Alabama Music Educators Hall of Fame thanks to the incredible impact he had on so many as their teacher.

Since 2015, Mr. Duren had been actively involved with the Oak Mountain Band program. He enjoyed leading jazz rehearsals, low brass sectionals, and even made a few appearances on the podium at our recent concerts. Our program adored him, and words cannot express our sadness that he is no longer with us.

Our band room was officially named in honor of him when he retired. We’ve done our best to uphold the traditions he set in place over two decades ago and will continue to do so for years to come. Thank you, Mr. Duren for embodying the “Spirit” of what band is all about. Our heartfelt thanks for inspiring all of those that were blessed to know you to strive for betterment throughout our lives.”
