To master the art of directing a musical performance, students in the conducting area will develop leadership, technique, problem solving abilities, and more. Students interested in this area will be required to audition with a University ensemble.

The Jazz Studies Program, a bachelor of music (BM) curriculum developed by Tom Wolfe and directed by Chris Kozak, is a program dedicated to the detailed study of jazz performance and arranging/composition. This degree, established on the firm foundation of the arranging program developed by Professor Steve Sample, is on the cutting edge of the curricula needed by versatile musicians.

Make a difference and inspire the next generation of music students by becoming a state-certified music educator! Students perform in choirs, orchestras, and bands while developing their musicianship as soloists, vocalists, ensemble musicians, conductors, chamber musicians, and more. Directing a musical performance of elementary, middle, and high school ensembles is vital for music educators. Students will work on their leadership, techniques, and problem-solving abilities. Hands-on experiences are found throughout the program and culminate in a five-month internship with accomplished educators throughout Alabama during their senior year.

Study with the region’s finest musicians. Perform in instrumental ensembles, orchestras, and bands. Work toward a variety of music professions: soloist, opera and concert vocalist, orchestral and band musician, conductor, chamber musician, recording artist, church musician, and more.

The major in performance culminates in a bachelor of music (BM) degree and requires the successful completion of one of the following six tracks: piano; organ; strings; woodwind, brass, and percussion; voice; jazz studies.
