Alumni Spotlight: Stephen Clark, DMA ’23

Stephen Clark was recently appointed as the Assistant Professor of Flute at Northwestern State University to begin in the Fall of 2023.

Dr. Clark completed his DMA in Flute Performance from the University of Alabama in the Spring of 2023.

During his degree he received a Graduate Council Fellowship, was the Graduate Teaching Assistant for the Flute Studio, and was awarded a Camilla Huxford Orchestral Scholarship.

In the 2 years of his DMA program, Stephen served as the flute player in the Huxford Wind Quintet as well as principal flute of the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, and UA Wind Ensemble. He was conductor of the University of Alabama Flute Choir and served as the first President of the newly founded University of Alabama Flute Society.

Over the duration of his degree, Stephen performed many recitals in both the US and Europe including successful recital invitations at the National Flute Association convention in Chicago, the Florida Flute Association in Orlando, the Mid-South Flute Convention in Memphis, and many others. In the past 2 academic years he has frequently been invited as a guest artist to many other universities and has given masterclasses at universities of Washington State, Idaho, Montana, Wisconsin-Whitewater, Northern Colorado, and many others.

In his 2nd year of academic studies, Dr. Clark successfully defended his dissertation titled “The Development, Tradition and Global Influence of the Paris Conservatoire Flute Examinations”

When asked about his time at the University of Alabama School of Music, he states:

“I have had the best time at Bama and I will miss everyone very much…..even the daily struggle of nobody understanding a word I say with my funny accent. Thank you to everyone at the School of Music for making me feel so welcome over the past 2 years. I’m looking forward to this next adventure!”
