Jason Dovel (trumpet)

 

Jason Dovel joined the University of Kentucky School of Music faculty in 2013, where he is associate professor of trumpet. He serves as faculty sponsor of UK Education Abroad programs in Greece, Poland, and Australia, and is also founding director of the UK Summer Trumpet Institute, UK Baroque Trumpet Symposium, as well as the Certificate in Baroque Trumpet.

Dovel enjoys a busy schedule as a soloist and clinician, having appeared at more than 70 universities and festivals in the United States and abroad. He has recorded three highly acclaimed solo CDs; his debut album, Lost Trumpet Treasures, was released in 2014 as a collaboration with pianist Edward Neeman. The International Trumpet Guild Journal reviewer wrote, “On every track, Dovel’s and Neeman’s nuanced, stylistic interpretations and technical mastery are on full display.” The American Record Guide described the disc as “spectacular” and praised Dovel’s “full tone and terrific technical skills.” The Brass Herald lauded the disc as “well-conceived and well-performed.” His second solo CD, Ascent: New Music for Trumpet, was released in 2016 and features eight new works for trumpet, four of which are his original compositions. Of his third compact disc, Baroque Music for Trumpet and Organ (2018), the Historic Brass Society reviewer wrote, “This is a brilliant CD of some of the most wonderful works in the trumpet repertoire, gloriously performed by Jason Dovel.”

As an orchestral trumpeter, he is a member of Charlottesville Opera, Lexington Chamber Orchestra, and the Kentucky Bach Society. As a chamber music entrepreneur, he is a founding member of Quintasonic Brass, Clarino Collective, and the early music group Sonitus Clarissima. Dovel has also played principal Baroque trumpet with many period instrument groups including Mountainside Baroque, Bourbon Baroque, Le Château de la Voix Baroque Orchestra, and others.

 

Dovel has published articles in the Music Educators JournalInternational Trumpet Guild JournalThe Instrumentalist, and China’s Journal of the Art College of Inner Mongolia University.  He is also editor of The Big Book of Sight-Reading Duets for Trumpet, published by Mountain Peak Music. Also active as a composer and arranger, his works have been performed around the world and are published through Prestissimo Press, Hickman Music Editions, Mountain Peak Music, and the Baroque Trumpet Shop.

 

Dovel serves on the Board of Directors for both the International Trumpet Guild and the Historic Brass Society.

Allie Woodbury (trumpet)

Originally from Alexandria, Virginia, Allie Woodbury earned her Bachelor of Music in trumpet performance from James Madison University (JMU) in 2019. She was the Second Prize winner in the high brass division of the North American Brass Band Association Competition in 2019. She also served as principal cornet/concertmaster of the Massanutten Brass Band in Virginia, and the flugelhorn soloist for the JMU Brass Band. At UK she performs with the Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Baroque Trumpet Ensemble, and Early Music Collective. She began her Master of Music degree in trumpet performance at UK in 2019, where she studies with Dr. Jason Dovel.

Margaret Tung (horn)

Hailed as “masterly” in the Chicago Classical Review and “spot on at every moment” in the Cleveland Plain Dealer, Dr. Margaret Tung is the Visiting Assistant Professor of Horn at University of Kentucky. She has performed with the famed Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Zurich Opera Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, Columbus Symphony Orchestra, Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra, Virginia Symphony Orchestra, Civic Orchestra of Chicago, and is principal horn of CityMusic Cleveland Chamber Orchestra.  In 2016, Dr. Tung commissioned John Cheetham’s Sonata for Horn and Piano and performed the world premiere at the acclaimed International Horn Symposium. In April 2015, Dr. Tung was one of five musicians to represent the USA in an international orchestra in Yerevan, comprised of 123 musicians from 43 different countries, to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Armenian Genocide. In 2011, Dr. Tung had the privilege of collaborating with Yo-Yo Ma in Once Upon a Symphony, a new Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO) project. She performed the world premiere of Spangled Unicorn by Anna Clyne with the CSO’s new music ensemble, MusicNOW. Dr. Tung performed Mozart’s Horn Concerto No. 3 with the Colorado College Summer Music Festival as the concerto competition winner. Other festivals she attended include Music Academy of the West, National Repertory Orchestra, and Spoleto Festival USA.

She can be heard as a featured soloist with Anima on their CD release, An Anima Christmas.  Her most recent recording release was Grammy nominated with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra entitled Concertos for Orchestra with principal music director, Louis Langrée.

Dr. Tung is an education enthusiast and has been on faculty at The University of Akron, Towson University, Kutztown University of Pennsylvania, Olivet Nazarene University, Wheaton College, Zurich International School in Switzerland and is currently on faculty at Marrowstone Music Festival in Bellingham, WA. Dr. Tung completed her Doctorate of Musical Arts at The Ohio State University and holds a Master of Music from Rice University and a Bachelor of Music from DePaul University. Her teachers include world renowned Dale Clevenger, William VerMeulen, Oto Carrillo, Jon Boen, David Griffin, and Bruce Henniss.

Bradley Kerns(trombone)

Bradley Kerns joined the faculty at the University of Kentucky in the fall of 2011.

 

As a soloist, Brad has performed on multiple occasions at the Eastern Trombone Workshop, the International Trombone Festival, the Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic, the Great American Brass Band Festival, the Jazz Education Network Conference, the Moscow Brass Days, the Brazilian Trombone Association Conference, the state education conferences of Tennessee, Kentucky and Ohio, the Art College of Inner Mongolia, and the DIA T Festival in Recife, Brazil to name a few.

As an educator, Brad has taught and given masterclasses at institutions such as the Conservatorio Pernambucano de Musica (Recife, Brazil), the Moscow Conservatory, the St. Petersburg Academy of Music, the University of Texas at Austin, the University of Texas at San Antonio, Texas State University, Morehead State University, the Art College of Inner Mongolia, the University of Colorado, Colorado State University, Eastern Kentucky University, Oberlin Conservatory, the Boston University Tanglewood Institute, Wright State University, Appalachian State University, and the Kentucky Governor’s School for the Arts.

Brad has been involved in nearly thirty recording projects under multiple recording labels and has performed for programs such as National Geographic, the BBC England and WRFL Lexington. His recently released solo recordings – Song Cycle, ReUnion, The Whistler and His Dog, Conversations, and Rising Sun – can be found on all major digital distribution websites such as iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, etc. Additionally, Brad can be heard as lead trombone on Wycliffe Gordon’s latest album, Somebody New (Wycliffe Gordon with the DiMarino/Osland Jazz Orchestra). He is a founding member of the Momus Trombone Quartet whose debut album, The Lexingport Project, remains one of the top-selling trombone quartet albums in the world.

Professor Kerns received a Bachelor of Music Education Degree from the University of Kentucky while studying with Dale Warren and a Master of Music Degree from Boston University while studying with Scott Hartman. Brad is an Edwards Instruments and Pickett Brass Performing Artist.

He currently resides in Lexington, Kentucky with his wife, Katie, their two sons, Charley and Simon, and two dogs, Sydney and June.

Matthew Hightower (tuba)

Matt Hightower is the Assistant Professor of Tuba/Euphonium at the University of Kentucky.

As a professional tubist, Matt Hightower’s performance experience covers a wide range of chamber, orchestral, and solo music that spans three continents and ten countries. He is a prizewinner of international solo competitions and has presented masterclasses to tuba/euphonium students around the world.

His growing list of solo residencies include Baylor University, Conservatory of Reykjavik (Iceland), Eastern Tennessee State University, the University of Louisiana at Monroe, the University of North Georgia, the University of Tennessee, the University of Texas, the 2019 International Tuba/Euphonium Conference, 2017 & 2018 South Central Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conferences, the 2015 & 2018 South East Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conferences, The United States Army Band Tuba/Euphonium Workshop in Arlington, VA and the Xi Xiang Music Valley (China) among others.

He is the tubist with the University of Kentucky Faculty Brass Quintet and has also performed with the Corpus Christi Brass Quintet, the Kingsville Brass Quintet, the Lexington Philharmonic Brass Quintet, the Mirari Brass Quintet, and the Atlas Tuba Quartet.

Some of his credits as a large ensemble performer include appearances with the Bloomington Camerata Orchestra, The Columbus (IN) Symphony, The Evansville Philharmonic, The Iceland Symphony Orchestra, The Jackson Symphony, the Lexington Philharmonic, the Victoria Symphony Orchestra, the Victoria Bach Festival, the WCIT World Orchestra in Yerevan, Armenia and David Baker’s 20th Century BeBop Band.

In addition to his career as teacher and performer, Dr. Hightower is an award-winning composer. In 2010 Dr. Hightower was named the winner of the KMEA Intercollegiate Composition Contest. Commissioned works by Dr. Hightower have received premier performances at the 2012, 2014, 2016, and 2019 International Tuba/Euphonium Conferences, the 2017 & 2018 South Central Regional Tuba Euphonium Conferences, the 2018 South East Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, the John F. Kennedy Center, and the 2016 Texas Music Educators Conference. Many of his arrangements and original works are published through Potenza Music and Absolute Brass Publishing. He is also a composer for Fannin Musical Productions, where he arranges and composes music for high school marching bands across the United States.

Matt earned a BM in music education from Murray State University, an MM in tuba performance from Indiana University, and a DMA from the University of Texas at Austin. His primary instructors were Ray Conklin, Daniel Perantoni, and Charles Villarrubia, with additional instruction in the field of composition from Mike D’Ambrosio, John Fannin, and P.Q. Phan.
